An interesting comparison of the energy consumption of two polar CPUs appeared on the Web – the mobile Intel Core i9-10980HK and the desktop AMD Ryzen 9 3950X: despite the twofold advantage in the number of cores of the latter, the first consumes even more energy!
Two laptops participated in the comparison – yes, AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is also used in mobile computers. In this case, the experimental machines were Schenker XMG Apex 15 (Intel platform) and Clevo (AMD platform). And as the result showed, a 16-core desktop PC can be even cooler than a laptop processor.

Core i9-10980HK power consumption reaches 135 watts
In fact, the Core i9-10980HK – the top representative of the Comet Lake-H line – consumes 135 watts under load. This is 30% more than the Ryzen 9 3950X, which works in ECO mode, consumes and at the same time, the 16-core performance is 95% of the maximum.
Two conclusions can be drawn from this. First: Intel’s 14-nanometer manufacturing process, which has been perfected to perfection, has absolutely nothing to oppose the 7-nanometer AMD manufacturing process. Second: if you choose a laptop based on Comet Lake-H processors (and especially the top models of the line), then it is better to choose a device with a battery of higher capacity and with a very good cooling system.
