From January, the Security Essentials update will stop.
Microsoft is now faced with a difficult task – how to get stubborn Windows 7 users to upgrade to more modern Windows 10.
For regular users, extended support for Windows 7 ends January 14, 2020. Microsoft now already warns users about the imminent death of Windows 7 and offers to switch to Windows 10. However, users are in no hurry to follow Microsoft’s advice.
With the termination of support on Windows, security updates will stop coming. It is still possible to maintain computer security using special software. However, here Microsoft will complicate the task for users. As it turned out, the proprietary free antivirus solution, Security Essentials, will also stop updating from January 14th.
On the corresponding support page, Microsoft again recommends switching to Windows 10 and emphasizes that the Windows Defender application is built into this version of the OS.
Windows Defender is an evolution of Security Essentials. This solution replaced Security Essentials as preinstalled on Windows 8 and Windows 10. Of course, you can use third-party solutions. For example, Avast Antivirus will continue to support Windows 7 for some time to come.
