After long conversations and statements in the summer of 2018, Foxconn began construction of its first plant in the United States. Then it was said about the project cost of $ 10 billion and that the factory will produce displays for smartphones.
However, over the past year and a half it has become clear that there are problems with this project. Firstly, Foxconn has several times changed its statements about what will be produced in this factory. Secondly, this summer it became known that by the time the facility is commissioned, only 1,500 jobs will be created instead of the promised 15,000.
And now there is information that allows you to look at the situation more extensively. The Verge resource got documents that shed light on the situation with the factory.
To begin with, it is worth noting that the Wisconsin authorities, as it turned out, repeatedly warned Foxconn that its project deviated from the original plans and that the company should make the appropriate changes so that it could continue to qualify for tax benefits of $ 4.5 billion. Foxconn eventually refused to do so. Moreover, initially it was Foxconn that took the initiative to make the necessary changes to the relevant documents.
Further more. According to the latest statements by Foxconn, the factory will indeed produce displays, however, if it was originally talking about the Gen 10.5 factory, then in the end Foxconn “reduced” the level to Gen 6, and the number of planned employees to 1,500. In addition, the company intended to produce coffee machines in the factory and make room for the data center. And all this would have to occupy a little more than 90,000 square meters, which is about 20 times less than the originally declared area.
But there are problems. Experts note that at the moment the facility lacks the foundation necessary for the construction of a factory for the production of screens of the declared level, and this despite the fact that Foxconn itself allegedly intends to put it into operation next year. As a result, state officials generally do not understand what exactly Foxconn is building, what will be produced at its factory and whether something will be produced there at all.
