The Zoom application, which has recently become very popular, fell into a big scandal. Thousands of personal videos of the service hit the Web and became available to everyone.
All these videos are recordings of sessions through Zoom. Among them are records of online lessons, therapy sessions, meetings of small business representatives, as well as just personal calls between friends and relatives. Moreover, on these videos you can sometimes find personal data of participants and even some kind of business information, including various reports. All these videos were recorded using Zoom and stored on a cloud storage without any password. It is worth noting that the Zoom application does not keep any communication sessions by default. Or rather, it should not lead. Perhaps all these videos were recorded at the request of their participants, but they certainly shouldn’t be in open access.
To better assess the magnitude of the problem, we note that last month Zoom exceeded 200 million daily users, compared to just 10 million in December. In this case, all-planetary quarantine caused by the coronavirus pandemic brought popularity to the application. The application is actively used in educational institutions, it was loved by small businesses.
Discovered a leak Patrick Jackson – technical director of the company engaged in the development of security software. He accidentally found a video with Zoom using a free online search engine that scans open cloud storages on the Internet. Apparently, we are talking about a minimum of 15,000 records.
The CEO of Zoom in his blog admitted that the service has now gained such popularity that its developers did not count on, and this led to problems that were not expected initially. Eric Yuan apologized and assured that the company would put all its efforts into fixing security holes.
