IBM experts created a cobalt-free battery that surpasses modern lithium-ion batteries

Today’s batteries often use heavy metals such as nickel and cobalt. This makes them dangerous to humans and the environment. The use of cobalt is criticized for another reason.

IBM experts created a battery of three materials that were not previously used in this capacity. There are no heavy metals in it. Materials for a new battery can be obtained from seawater.

According to IBM, new batteries may be cheaper than existing lithium-ion batteries, surpassing them in charging speed and energy density. It is important that the new batteries are also less flammable.

To commercialize the development, the researchers partnered with Mercedes-Benz, Central Glass’s electrolyte supplier, and Sidus battery manufacturer.
