18GB and 20TB Western Digital HDD shipments began, using CMR and SMR technology, respectively

So far, these are evaluation samples.
Western Digital has announced the start of the supply of sample hard disk drives, which have the largest volumes in two categories: HDD with conventional magnetic recording (CMR) and HDD with tiled magnetic recording (SMR). The first is an 18 TB Ultrastar DC HC550 CMR drive, the second is a 20 TB Ultrastar DC HC650 SMR drive. Both belong to the corporate segment. Their release was announced in September 2019.

The increase in volume allows you to reduce the number of drives in storage, reducing power and energy requirements. The basis of these drives is a common platform HelioSeal with nine disks. Both models are offered in versions with SATA 6 Gb / s and SAS 12 Gb / s interfaces.

The manufacturer expects to start serial deliveries in the first half of 2020.
